Cough is a protective mechanism to clear the airways of any foreign particles.
Productive coughs bring up phlegm or mucus. Cough mixtures contain expectorants such as guaifenesin, ammonium chloride helps coughing. Coloured phlegm is a sign of lung infection and the patient should consult his GP.
Dry cough is non-productive cough. This requires further investigation if it does not reslove itself after a few weeks.
Cough mixtures can contain several ingredients such as antihistamines, cough suppressants, demulcents etc.
