Piles or haemorrhoids are varicose veins occuring around the rectum. Symptoms include itching.discomfort and sometimes dull ache. Piles may also bleed when the bowels are open. Any significant bleeding or dark blood, or blood mixed in with the stool should be referred to a doctor. Any change to bowel habit, abdominal pain, weight loss, frequent omiting or passage of mucas in the stool all require further medical investigation.
Treatment involves reducing the swelling of the varicous veins and easing the pain.
Constipation is a major cause of piles. Eating a high fibre diet and drinking plenty of fluid would be benaficial.
