Topical analgesics are applied externally to relieve pain. They can be divided into two classes :NSAID (none steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs ) and counter irritants.
NSAID such as piroxicam, diclofenac, ibuprofen etc act systemically and locally so care must be taken when other pain killers are taken orally.
Counter irritants contain methyl, ethyl, or other esters of salicylic acid cause vasodilation ( warming effect )
and mild analgesia.
Patients with persistant pain should consult their GP.
